System

At Roanoke, our aim is to create an enjoyable environment for players of all types, recognizing that it's impossible to please everyone. Our system is designed to cater to a wide range of preferences, offering players the choice between a dice system and freeform roleplay, within reasonable bounds.

Freeform

In Roanoke's freeform roleplay, we don't require players to use a dice or number system for combat or magic interactions. Instead, we encourage players to engage in collaborative storytelling and expect everyone to follow proper etiquette, adhere to the rules, and maintain clear OOC communication to prevent conflicts. If players encounter difficulties resolving IC interactions using freeform methods, we encourage them to resort to the dice system.

Dice System

In the landing zone, we provide a dice HUD that allows players to roll a 1d100 for various actions: Attack (used for offensive maneuvers), Defense (used for defensive actions), and General (for actions not covered by attack and defense, such as healing). As per standard dice rules, a lower roll indicates a less successful outcome, and for defensive actions, the attacker must beat the roll to succeed.

Health

Although health tracking is optional, we offer a health meter for players who prefer to monitor their characters' well-being. If a player opts out of the health system, damage is still dealt, but the extent of its impact on the character is left to the player's discretion. In case conflicts arise due to this choice, we may request that players use the health meter to be fair.

Damage is not dealt on a percentage to avoid complicating a combat interaction. A standard attack it worth "1 hp" which amounts to half a heart on the HUD and the stronger attacks deal up to  "3 hp" which amounts to a heart and a half. Once your character hits 0 hearts, you may choose to have them "pass out" or actually "die" depending on your play style.

It's worth noting that certain scenarios and storytelling elements may necessitate dice rolls and storyteller involvement. These situations will be clearly indicated where the option arises, contact staff about the requirement for dice and a storyteller if needed.
